Any word on what went wrong and where the kids can go while this is sorted out? https://wtop.com/alexandria/2024/09/alexandria-elementary-school-closes-after-lead-found-in-classrooms/

And very scary for those families.
(APS also had some water quality issues several years back; not sure if they were fixed) |
When we went through this with our DCPS, it was very helpful to get both the finger test and the vein blood draw from Children's. I'd definitely recommend them again or at least a peds focused lab. Our son didn't even realize that it was supposed to hurt a bit, they were so good with it. |
Brooks also is now listed as accredited with conditions based on the updated VDOE school quality profiles that were just released. Not a good week for them. |
What can be done after exposure?? |
Not really. Most of those kids live in houses with lead paint. If they have higher the normal lead levels they place to look is in the home. |
Awful. And from what friends in that neighborhood have relayed, there’s no clear long-term plan for when students will be able to get back in the building for in-person learning. Anyone heard more recent updates? |
Is there any discussion of why they randomly did testing or where the lead came from? |
There are medicines that bind with the lead and remove it from the bloodstream. It can’t improve damage already done, but it can prevent more harm. Lead associated problems are due to exposure over time, this is a short term exposure. |
There was a window replacement going in and the contractor did not follow the protocols to prevent lead dust. Someone (unclear who) noticed this and notified the school so they did testing. |
What happened to cause them to end up accredited with conditions? |
There’s lead testing at the Alexandria Health Department today and tomorrow. Free. Walkins available. |
This was disturbed and airborne. That is 100% different than encapsulated by multiple layers of latex. |
Depends. Renovations happen all the time and sometimes no renovations. Lead paint was used up until the 70s. It's possible that a home has had no painting since then. |
Renovations require contractors treat areas appropriately. Thats on you if you went with 'the lowest bid.' No Rosemont home has missed being painted for 46 years. |
