Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| Does anyone know anything about this school? We hear a lot of great things about the mclean elementary schools but don't know anything about Great Falls Elementary. |
|
It's Great Falls.
9 of 10 on GS, under 1% free/reduced price lunch. If you have problems there, you'll probably have problems anywhere. |
| Check on the high school. A lot of those kids go to Langley and the bus ride is ridiculously long. Friends of ours actually moved from GF to McLean just b/c their kids were spending 45+ min on the bus each way. |
Ha, ha; most of those parents fight tooth and nail to make sure their kids keep going to Langley rather than Herndon or South Lakes. But, seriously, the Langley boundaries are nuts and have led to tons of resentment. Langley HS is over near the CIA, almost in Arlington. Since many of the houses in the area are on large lots in McLean and Great Falls, the high school ought to be one of the smallest ones in the county, with students living out toward Loudoun and north of Route 7 assigned to Herndon or South Lakes. Instead, the School Board built an addition to Langley, ensuring that the students would continue to have 45+ minute bus rides. |
| To be fair, some parts of Great Falls are isolated enough that you would have 25-30 minute rides to Herndon or South Lakes. There's no good option there, but since they're in Great Falls, I'm sure they'll all survive. |
Maybe, but that's besides the point. There's no good reason, other than a history of catering to the well-connected, that students living south of Route 7 or west of Springvale Road are still being bussed long distances to Langley HS at the expense of others. |
