When you put gpa into common app as weighted, is it on a scale of 4 or 5?
In other words, should it be written 4.5/4 or 4.5/5? |

That does not make sense. If it were on a 5 point scale, it would not be "weighted." The whole notion of weighted means "additional." Also a weighted GPA includes weighted and non-weights classes, so it couldn't be out of 5.0 because that is impossible for the unweighted classes. So, my guess is that this counselor or someone even higher up in MCPS doesn't understand weighting. They (W and UW) are both on a 4.0 scale, but one is weighted. |

This is exactly what I thought and makes a lot of sense. But I did some googling on this and concluded that most think of weighted as a 5.0 scale and that's what most folks put for weighted. |

OP - our advisor and counselor just said out of 5. So should be written 4.5/5

They are wrong--if you look at the instructions in the Common App it says to use 4.0 scale. |

| Whitman’s guidance office distributed a document saying that WGPA is out of 5.0. No one gets a 5.0 due to required courses that are unweighted. Some kids get pretty close, though. |

I saw this in Whitman's guidance too but think it's BS, because of a 5.0 not being possible. My DS put 4.0 scale for his 4.6 WGPA. The AOs can figure it out! |

I sure hope they can figure it out because DD used a 5-point scale for her 4.7 from Whitman. Already submitted 3 EAs so can’t change it now. Sigh. |

Your school will send an info sheet to the colleges which shows the breakdown of grades in the senior class. They show very clearly the grade inflation at MCPS. They also show that almost every class is our of 5 not 4.
In MCPS a 4.0 weighted is likely a B student since most schools have everyone in honors classes. |
