| Know many do not join fraternities, but for those that would like to, would your kid NOT go to a school that doesn’t have a particular fraternity? Ask because, for example, 5 fraternities terminated at UVA (Kappa Alpha and Phi Gamma Delta in 2022, and Theta Chi, PKA and Kappa Sig in 2024). Is being a legacy at fraternity even something a kid wants these days? |
| My son is a college freshman. I don't think he could name my fraternity. |
Ask your kid. |
|
legacy no longer helps.
its irrelevant unless you are in the flagship SEC schools |
| LOL, sure! I chose my college in part because it had no Greek life, and my DD chose hers (a different school) in part for the same reason! Bet that’s not the answer you were looking for. |
I’d think the better question would be why those fraternities are no longer operating on campus. studentaffairs.virginia.edu/subsite/pace/suspended-and-terminated-student-organizations Not sure I’d want my kid in any fraternity on a campus where this type of thing is so common. |
+1 Troll. Fraternities are different everywhere you go. Dad's fraternity at school X might be filled with a bunch of people not unlike the kid. That's the purpose of rush... for both to find a fit or not. |
The question is crazy. I was in a sorority. Fraternities and sororities vary school by school and even year by year. At some schools a chapter is very strong and very weak at others. Delta Gamma was a perfect example of this. So your husband’s fraternity may be a bunch of losers 20+ years later. Or not, but still not the best fit for your kid. |
Sorry you didn't think you could get a bid. |
No, kids are too embarrassed to even tell them they are a legacy. Getting a notification to look at a certain kid is not a help anymore. |
|
It’s going to depend on the kid. Has he heard his whole life how great his Dad’s fraternity is, watched his dad be involved in the alumni group, going to the same college…? Then maybe.
Also, while things have changed related to legacies, it is generally that there is now no requirement to give a legacy a good chance not that legacy status is hidden. |
NP. I also chose a school without Greek life (Georgetown) largely for the same reason. It wasn't about getting a bid; I just wanted a different college experience. Greek life just wasn’t a priority for me; I had other things I wanted to focus on. I preferred a different environment, and it worked out great for me. How small-minded you are to think that everyone cares about joining a fraternity or sorority. Most people DGAF. |
And most people DGAF about why you chose your college and whether it had a greek system or not but it's cute you took the time to tell us. |
No, because OP qualified that the question was about kids who want to join. But please, do share your irrelevant anecdote about how you and your kid weren't interested
|
Thanks for reinforcing the stereotype -- or is it commonly held view? -- that people who go Greek are rude a-holes. Well done! |
