FCPS Basketball tryouts

Are teams all but pre-determined before tryouts? Rising Freshman wants to make JV or Varsity but hasn't gotten any indication yet that they're being considered for those teams. Is that typical?

Are they going to Green Day’s and conditioning practices?

This. They should know how they stack up.

It really depends and we can't help you without more information. At most schools he would have to be pretty incredible to be making Varsity as a freshman-is he a superstar?

Is it a large public high school?
Is it a private school that recruits for their teams?
Is it none of the above?
Is he going to the green days?
Is there a fall league? If there is a fall league, what team did the coaches put him on?

OP said "FCPS" so not private.

Which school? Some are a lot more competitive than others. Its difficult for a freshman to make Varsity at most big publics but somewhere like TJ? Eh. Maybe.

I have a child who just started private middle school (flint hill). I have heard they recruit for their sports teams including basketball.

Does that mean an average good basketball player won’t make the team?

For middle school, I believe everyone makes the team. There are 3 teams between 7th and 8th grade.

For public, just go to Green Days?

Well, it helps. But a kid going to green days won't make the team over a better player.

But it will show you how you stack up. A freshman at green days who isn’t wildly better than the rest of the freshman will know that they aren’t making varsity.

Some kids can be a little delusional.

We know a kid who just moved from a country not known for basketball. The kid is a sophomore and plans to try out for basketball. They have absolutely no idea how competitive it is around here, how long and hard these kids train and how many years they have played.

I'm not sure I understand this question. It's mighty presumptuous to think your kid has a chance at JV or Varsity as a freshman unless they're very good. And if they're very good, then of course they'd make either the JV or Varsity team. Teams are NOT pre-determined in most FCPS high schools as far as I know. If your kid is good, they will make room for him/her.

Yeah but the kid is athletic and has a 6’8” wingspan so the coach will definitely bump one of the kids who has trained for years to make room for him…

Seriously your post is weird and reads as you mocking a random kid who wants to try out for a team.

I’m not mocking anyone. The kid is 5’8”, not 6’8”.
