Antibiotics and anxiety

Anonymous
DS (11) has never been the easiest kid and we see hints of anxiety at times, but overall he/we manage it pretty well. He had an ear infection last week and was on antibiotics. I don’t even remember the last time he took amoxicillin, but it’s been many years. He was irritable, definitley more anxious and overall just hard to manage. He took his last dose Tuesday morning and was a different kid yesterday. Could this be the antibiotics? Has anyone else noticed their kid having personality changes on antibiotics?

No. It must be some kind of coincidence. Amoxicillin does not affect the brain or mood.

Wrong. Antibiotics destroy gut bacteria and there is a link between gut biodiversity and mental health. They now think it might be that PANDAS isn't caused by the strep itself but by the antibiotics used to treat it.

OP start your kid on a high quality probiotic and try to get them to eat some fermented food. This isn't in your head.

He is irritable becuase he is stuffed up and his ear hurts. Simple.

More likely it was the illness itself making him feel off.

Oh, that alleged link to mental health is such total nonsense and contrary to actual science. Internet rumor mongering.

Yes. Occam’s Razor, thank you.

Oh and in case you're too lazy to read: "Significant evidence links anxiety and depression disorders to the community of microbes that live in the gastrointestinal system. Modified diet, fish and omega-3 fatty acid intake, macro- and micro-nutrient intake, prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics, postbiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation, and 5-HTP regulation may all be utilized to alter the gut microbiota as a treatment approach."
