Do most pre teens gain weight?

Anonymous
I have a pre tee who is pre-pubescent. I keep waiting for her to gain weight but it hasn’t happened yet. Her friends are all gaining weight and I assume will hit puberty sooner than her.

In 7 months she has gained maybe 1 pound? She is turning 10 in 4 months.

Bro she's 9

Yes. But all growing kids should be gaining weight yearly. 1 lb in 7 months would be concerning to me. My daughter gained anywhere from 5-15 lbs per year all through childhood until about 2 yrs after first period.

Op - correct and her friends are all getting tall and gaining weight. Same ages. She is not doing either. She looks like a little girl still (which is totally fine!) but I am not sure if I should be concerned and raise it with her ped about her lack of weight gain when most kids gain weight around now as they start inching toward puberty.

Kids go through puberty at different ages, and kids have different body types. My own DD was nowhere near starting puberty at age 9, and has always been skinny. Our pediatrician has never had any concerns whatsoever.

Rather than wasting your time on here call the nurse line at your pediatrician's office and ask them. They will have her charts and they have medical degrees and can tell you whether this is an issue or not.

Mine is 11 and no signs of puberty yet. Other 11 year olds are years into puberty. Frankly I'm relieved she's not dealing with looking like a young woman at this age.

Have you talked to her doctor? Our daughter has been gaining weight slowly, and our doctor has definitely brought it up. We push food a little more than we used to do, and it's helped some.

The growth charts indicate how much weight a child should be gaining. One pound seems very low for half a year, unless she was on the heavier side and began stretching out (growing taller without gaining a lot of weight). Everyone hits puberty on their own timing but I'd be concerned because that is low weight gain even for a prepubertal child. Pediatrician should be able to help.

My 13 year old gained some weight this winter and I thought for sure it was going to be puberty shortly thereafter, but nope, she slimmed down again as she grew and we just had her 14 yo check up a couple weeks early and she put on 2.5 inches this year and 10 lbs, just like pretty much every other year in recent memory.

OP - I will definitely bring it up with our pediatrician. DD is only 4'7" (maybe?) and weighs about 65 pounds. She was 4'5" at her 9 year appointment and also 65 pounds. That was 7 months ago. She does have a pretty good appetite, eats well, but does not gain weight. She is steadily dropping in percentiles. She started at 99th percentile as a baby for weight and stayed there until 2. After 2 she started dropping each year down, 70th then 50th and now at the 38th percentile for weight. Her height went from 99th to 75th by the time she was 2 and now at 9 she is in the 40th percentile for height.

Mine just turned 11 and has gained a little more weight starting at 10. She actually started at very small percentiles for height and weight, fluctuating over the years between 5th-10th percentile and is now around 50th for both. She doesn’t really have signs of puberty yet but is just more average sized than she was. Some of her friends are tiny and some are way bigger than her. I wouldn’t really be concerned, there is a wide age range for puberty.

I have a teen who was slower to enter puberty. She decreased significantly on the height percentile but is now climbing back up again. She gained 3 pounds between 9 and 10. She gained 15 pounds between 13 and 14. For a long time she was much shorter than her friends, but is now starting to pass them.

You're overly anxious for someone who is only guessing at current weight and height.

OP - we are dealing with some health issues with DD so I know her weight exactly. Just not 100% sure about her height but it is pretty close to what I mentioned above. I was surprised when she was weighed recently that she hadn't gained any weight in 7 months.

Weight can easily vary within 5 pounds or so, no? Perhaps because of the health issues, your DD did not eat much dinner or breakfast before her doc appointment, so her weight measured 5 pounds lower than her "normal" weight. I wouldn't be concerned at all. But if you are stressing, then ask about it at the next appt.
