Thoughts and prayers are with her poor family, back in North Carolina

This isn’t really a travel topic.

My neighbor is a refugee from South Africa, yes a refugee. Native born there and her stories are eye opening. Not a chance my dd/ds would be in South Africa yet alone hiking alone. Not in these times. Prayers for her family.

This is sad. Never hike alone, even locally.

I would love to know on what basis someone was granted refugee status from South Africa.

Untrue.

Some countries are particularly dangerous for female travelers.

1/4-1/3 of adult South African men report having raped a women.

Not somewhere I would recommend you send your daughter on vacation.

This is so tragic. I lived in Cape Town for a year and I would have never done this hike alone.

Table Mountain is beautiful. Cape Town’s setting is stunning…but the crime is off the charts. For example, cabs do not stop at red lights at night, so that they can avoid armed robbery.

1 dead hiker? by that metric, never go to Arizona or California

It is sad that women must live within tight constraints , around the world , to avoid sexual violence and murder. We really are not as free as men. And that is accepted as the way it will always be.

I guess you are a man.

I totally agree but my comment is not about sexual violence and murder. I don't think it's a given that she was harmed by someone else is it? It's a pretty dangerous hike and hiking alone is not recommended under most circumstances. There is crime there and it's a huge shock to the system to American women, especially if they aren't from a big city. But I would still go back in a heartbeat.

It's an article about 1 dead hiker at a popular national park. I could post the same about most large parks in the American west
