MCAP scores

DD age 10 now grade 5 brought home scores from her testing this past Spring. Sadly, she is not proficient. She scored below all averages (state, LEA, and school) - and only attained low Level 2 scores. She made mostly As with a few Bs on her report card. What does this mean? Her MAP scores are not great either but not this low! Teachers usually love her because she is sweet, kind, and a people pleaser and wants to do well. I guess grades do not mean much - but I definitely think I need to get my child some help. I take her to the library to get books, play math based games, etc. please recommend what else to do.

I would ask her teacher if she thinks that the scores are reflective of her actual skill as a first step.

You are realizing what many of us have realized, which is that MCPS engages in serious grade inflation at the classroom level. I'm sorry. If you can afford a reading and math tutor, get them. MCPS is not going to get it together in time to save your child.

Could your kid have simply just approached the tests with a 'whatever' style not caring what answers they select? Most students know this test doesn't mean much unless it is being counted for 10-20% of their semester grades in HS.

For math try Kahn academy tests, grade by grade, to identify areas that need work. Write that down. Then work every day on those areas, in additional to regular homework.

For reading - let her read aloud, so if she is reading fluently. If not, practice reading. Read to her and have her read to you. Let her write a summary of what she read/was read to her.

Opposite situation here with my ADHD son. Bad grades, teachers often assume incompetence, yet is proficient (high 4) and has high MAP.
