Geneva - 2 wintery days itinerary

Anonymous
I've searched but can't find a couple good recommendations for things to do, see, eat, in Geneva in December (all 18+ and seasoned travelers - but coming up empty for Geneva things).

Geneva is boring. It’s only a city that you go for one day and then quickly travel to somewhere else. During the summer it’s all about the gorgeous lake, bike riding around it, chocolate, and an occasional good restaurant or cafe. But you aren’t missing anything. We were there this summer and literally hit the top things to see and do in one afternoon. In fact, we stayed way too long and would have just used the time to go somewhere else in Switzerland like Lauderbrunnen Valley or the Glacier Express. In fact, I would just skip Geneva and fly into Zurich and go to St. Moritz to jump on the glacier express during the wintertime. Then end in Zermatt and fly out of Geneva.

What are you going to do there for two weeks?? I was just there in July and we struggled for things to do for the two days we were there, so we took day trips to two towns in France

2 DAYS - to save $5,000 on airfare (weird but true)

It really is very boring and cold! Are you open to day trips?

I am not one to whine about travel, but have to agree with PPs who said Geneva is incredibly dull. It felt to me like being trapped around 18th & K NW.

Rent a car and take day trips from Geneva. Drive to Annecy in France. Go skiing at Praz De Lys Sommand, Morize, or Grand Massif all of which are only a 1 hour drive from the heart of Geneva.

There’s a Christmas market. It’s not very exciting but has a few rides and mulled wine and such. I guess seeing the Jet d’Eau and walking along the lake is nice. The old town is also cute but nothing terribly exciting if you’ve traveled in Europe. The UN does group tours of its headquarters, which is cool. Book that well in advance, though.

I agree with other PPs that it’s not a super exciting city. I would consider a day trip if you have two full days. Lyon is really nice (and can be done on the train, two hours each way). Annecy is also cute, but I think you would need a car. Yvoire, Montreux, and Gruyeres (cheese factory!) are also options.

The Red Cross has a museum, as does the Patek Philippe watch company. The UN has already been mentioned. You can take a tram to CERN for a tour: https://visit.cern/guided-tours Take the cablecar up the Saleve for great views of Geneva, Mont Blanc and opther mountains, and the lake: https://www.geneve.com/en/attractions/detail/the-mont-saleve-cable-car You can take the # 8 bus to get there: https://www.tpg.ch/en/getting-mont-saleve

If you like shopping, window or otherwise, Geneva has a large number of very high end boutiques for watches and jewelry.

Take the bus to CERN and take the tour. There is also a bus that goes directly to Annecy. You don't need a car.

Carrouges is a nice area to walk around. THe Olympic Museum in Lausanne. Fete de l'escalade if your dates coincide. Musee Rath is also enjoyable.

I haven't been there in the Winter for a while. But I would go to Bain des Paquis for sauna, dip in the Lake and fondue. Ice skating rink at Parc des Bastions, hot chocolate neaby at Lyrique or Remor. Museum Barbier Muller is interesting. I think Montreux might be nice at that time too, they had a Christmas market when we went.
