Closet redesign cost

How much does it cost to get a custom closet? Mine is about 12 x 18 feet. I am sure it varies wildly based on materials. I was quoted $10K for bottom-of-the line basics. And I feel like that should be the price of higher end materials.

For 12x18, $10,000 sounds reasonable…

For two mid-level 8x10s, we paid $20,000 around 5 years ago (with builders discount included)

Yes, starting aty $10k for nothing fancy.

Depending on your priorities, you can achieve the utility for less. Drawers? To the inch customization? Solid shelves or wire? That stuff.

That is larger than any of the bedrooms in my house. 10k actually sounds pretty cheap. But I guess it very much depends on what you are putting in. How many cabinets vs shelves, how many drawers etc.

OP here. Thanks for all the input. I'm not overly concerned with the appearance (although I don't want it to look super cheap)- mostly concerned with utility. It's a brand new build and what they installed looks really nice but for such a big closet it's kind of a waste of space. It's just rods and shelves - no cabinets or drawers. If anyone has a closet place to recommend that would be helpful.

Ime drawers are cheapest at IKEA with their top rail system and best at Container store with elfa (also top rail), but I know a lot of people here don’t like mesh or wire. I love the top rail systems personally because it’s easy to install and modify later, and because I like the mesh and wire. So ymmv.

We had a MUCH smaller closet and didn't care how it looked, so went with Elfa from the Container Store. FWIW, they have a big sale in January.

Measurement and installation was smooth and it was a drastic improvement on functionality for us.

I’m putting in ikea pax in a storage closet after being quoted 20k for custom. I spent about 2k in pax and, in a fit of frugality, also decided to put it together myself after being quoted $400 to assemble it. It has gone smoothly so far and I’m about 50% done after a day and a half. I like that I can customize everything and I also added hooks to the sides and cut holes for outlets, etc.

Your CLOSET is 12x18? Yeah of course that's going to cost a lot.

Imo if you’re going to have a 12x18 ft closet you should spend idk, $40k on the cabinetry? It’s more like a kitchen. Why have it if you’re not going to finish it properly?

Elda is on sale right now for 30% off through Friday I think. It’s not only in January anymore. They have a higher end line now too but it’s not on sale.

OP here. I am generally of this mindset, but I guess my hang up is that I was not anticipating that kind of cost. Because it's a closet I don't need it to be the nicest materials imaginable- but I don't want it to look cheap either.

Get a quote from Closet Stretchers. For me, they came in at thousands less than other brands I received quoted from (including the IKEA Elfa with the wire shelves - I mean, who wants that?), and I still love my closet years later.

10k for that size is a typical base price. We went well over that in one of our homes.
