Origin of fruit and vegetables in stores

Why is it not clearly marked with the town or at least state of provenance? I see it often on blueberries and apples, but a lot of salad does not have a location. I was just at Trader Joe's looking at greens section and majority stated "Distributed by TJ, Monrovia CA" but not where the lettuce was actually grown.

If they don’t say where it’s from, you’re supposed to know that it has no safety standards.

I don’t trust TJ’s for produce or meat, but their cheeses are more reliable imo.

HMart has those cards on all of the fresh items (meat, produce, fish, etc.) with where it's from.

I think the FDA requires a label if it is grown in a different country but not if it’s grown here in the U.S. so the salad is probably grown in California if it’s distributed from there.

Because the location changes depending on the season and changing the labels costs money.

It could just be a sticker. Idk, there is something a little gross about it. This is a huge country and we should know where our food comes from.

I read that eventually barcodes will be replaced by qr code's which can be read for much more info...like where something is from, date picked, etc

The reason is because the actual source changes from shipment to shipment, even though the distributor stays the same. The distributor buys their lettuce from multiple farms and then packages it under the same label. That TJ lettuce probably comes from a different town every time you buy it.

All parts of the United States are subject to the same food safety regulations. There isn't anything gross about US produce (except pesticides, but location won't help you with that.) What is gross is food from China (looking at you adulterated honey, etc.) or Mexico/Central America, where workers go to the bathroom in the field or soak melons, scallions, etc. in e.Coli water.

Just think about that...came all the way to east Coast (if you are on east Coast) from CA. Buy local if you can.

The Yuma Valley. AZ romaine is literally grown a few feet away from a river of cow shit: the cows are right on the other side of the canal, and the water used for irrigating the salads is full of shit. That's why there was a huge e.coli outbreak in 2018.
