He thought he bombed the August SAT and registered for the October SAT before the scores were released. Turned out he did much better than he'd thought, getting a score of 1510 (720R&W/ 790M)
DC hasn't been able to study for the October SAT because of his schoolwork and fall sports. It would be nice to increase R&W by 30 points to superscore, but not sure he'll be able to do it in two weeks. He didn't know he had to pay $29 to cancel the registration! Should he still take the exam just because we had paid for it already? Should he cancel and try again in December or next spring? |
| I would tell him to take it-- nothing to lose. Many kids improve justing taking it again. |

Wait, he’s a junior?! Absolutely no need to take the October test. There will be plenty more opportunities and his score will naturally go up by next August.
My daughter is a senior with identical scores and even she is considering skipping the October test. |
| Bag it. 1510 is a great score. |
| yeah why waste time - cancel it and enjoy life. |
| My Junior got the same score and will be taking again in October. Wants to take when summer test prep is still fresh, and get testing over with to focus on other activities. |
This. |

Don’t do what I did. My kid took 4 SATs junior year and just went down in score because he was exhausted and had no time to study
Went up 150 points to a 1520 as a senior by studying over the summer. We learned you don’t improve by osmosis |
| I would recommend rescheduling it for the Spring after APs. |
| Just have him take it and see what happens. And then don’t worry about taking it again. |
| Did he do better than 720 V on the practice tests? If so, I’d go for it. If not, I wouldn’t bother at this stage. |
| DC got 1520 on July SAT, cancelled October test, and scheduled a back-up test in June, in case they change their mind and decide to take it another time. Not sure it makes sense to do it again (as first ACT score was 35). |
| If he waits until spring or next fall his score will probably go up without any prep. The brain matures. |
That’s what I thought. Your kid needs rest before SAT. 1510 is a great score. Have them sit for free junior year test and maybe take August 2025. |
That's a good point. He did the practice tests in this order before the August SAT and his RW scores were PT#1 (730) #6 (710) #5 (760) #2 (730). Apparently he hasn’t even tried PT #3 and 4 yet. Looking at his PT scores vs the official score of 720, it’s unlikely to get higher than 720 at the Oct exam without additional studies since August, isn't it? |
