Starting a new role/company- vacation already scheduled

Anonymous
I landed my first VP role to start nov 1 for an MNC! i am so excited. here's my problem--- I already booked nonrefundable vacation from Dec 24 to Jan 12 overseas. what's the best way for me to approach this with my SVP? My husband tells me just state, dont ask... but I feel that is weird. The company itself shuts down from dec 24 to jan 1. Any wise thoughts?

Lmao you’re a Vp and don’t know how to tell someone you have vacation?

This is something I would bring up when accepting the position. Likely not a deal breaker but it is the professional thing to do.

Just tell them you had previously scheduled a vacation for the first two weeks of January. So you'll be happy to take those two weeks unpaid.

Yes you bring this up during negotiations so it can be in offer letter.

This kind of thing happens all the time, just let them know. There is likely an established policy for stuff like this.

It doesn't need to be in the offer letter. Just let your boss know you have a vacation scheduled.

When I have hired people they would ask about this during the negotiations. I have never said no, if I want the person bad enough we will just figure it out re: staffing etc.

I’ve been both the employee and the hiring manager in this situation. It’s always been discussed during the conversation about the offer. It seems a bit late now, but I would tell them and offer to take the time unpaid.

How much PTO do you get?

I don’t know why people are saying you should offer to take it unpaid. Like another PP, I have both been hired with a pre-planned vacation and given an offer to someone who had a pre-planned vacation and in neither scenario was not going unpaid at all discussed or in my case contemplated. You definitely should have told them when you accepted the offer though. I would tell them as soon as you see what they say.

NP. Some companies don’t allow you to go in the hole for PTO (meaning you can’t take time off until you’ve accrued it).
