Please help me understand Bancroft's programs

Anonymous
I have a kindergartner in Ward 4 and this will be our first time doing the lottery. I am focusing on Deal feeders.

I know any of them are a long shot, but I want to make sure I understand Bancroft.

It's Spanish immersion, right? Is it even possible for my DC to go if they are coming from a non-immersion kindergarten?

I searched old threads but they all seemed to be before the boundary study completed, so sorry if this is a stupid question. Thank you.

Yes it's possible. Many of the kids come from non-immersion.

OP here, thank you. And it still feeds into Deal right?
Anonymous
Yes it still feeds to Deal and yes you can start in K. But to be clear, the school is overcrowded and they do not and never will offer OOB seats in K. Only if you are Spanish dominant, which it doesn’t sound like, Oyster-Adams has better odds.

Many of us in Ward 4 are at Hardy feeders. More OOB seats because they’re in higher income neighborhoods so more IB families are in private. Our drive is 20-25 mins and we actually prefer Hardy to Deal. TBD on MacArthur, but cautiously optimistic if a by-right high school is the best choice.

Thank you, PP. Could you please tell me the Hardy feeders? I haven't actually seen Oyster-Adams on a list. Thank you so much.

Thank you! So the way the lottery works, I'd there is no chance of getting in somewhere like Bancroft, is it worth listing it or does that hurt your chances elsewhere?

List Bancroft as your top choice and it won’t hurt your chances of getting in somewhere else. If you happen to get the top lottery number you’ll get into Bancroft (maybe) but basically no one gets in OOB.

Thank you. This is our first time doing the lottery (obviously).

I think I'm doing something like:

# Oyster-Adams
#2 Shepherd
#3 Hearst
#4 Bancroft I guess?
#5 Lafayette
#6 Murch
#7 Janney
Hardy feeders in order of commute for the rest?

List in order of preference. There's really nothing more to it than that. You can only list 12 in the lottery but as soon as the results come out you can add yourself to the bottom of the wait-list (really the bottom of any preference category you have, though it sounds like you don't have any so you will just be last on the list) at as many schools as you want.

But also think of what will happen in the likely scenario where you don't get into any of those schools.

Just making sure you know Oyster Adams is K-8 Spanish immersion since you started your thread looking for a specific middle school feeder.

OP here, yes, thank you. I think my kid would benefit from that so figure might as well go for broke and list it. I know the whole thing is a long shot

What is your top choice school? Put that at #1

I’m a Bancroft parent. You don’t have a chance of getting in for K. The school is very overcrowded. For the 25-26 school year the preK is going to be in a swing space and there are some medium term plans for an annex. It still may not be enough.
