| Is AP World History regarded as one of the must takes for top colleges? DD takes orchestra every year, and it does take away opportunities to explore many classes. She took Honor World History online over the summer so that she can fit in orchestra in 11th grade. She is currently also taking AP Chem (double period), AP Calc BC, French 5, AP Comp Sci, and AP Comp & Language. Her HS counselor isn't giving much useful advice aside from "that's fine". Wondering if I should have stepped in and advise DD differently or at least to reconsider certain combinations. FWIW, she will likely go into something in the STEM field. |
| No. It’s fine. |
| It depends how high she is aiming and what other kids at her high school applying to the same schools take. |
| Our school doesn’t even offer AP World History |
| I’d put it up there with AP Environment Science, AP Psychology and AP Econ. All fine but not show stoppers, especially for a STEM major. In the common app, there’s an “other information” section where you can address that you took a summer history class (only honors and regular offered) so that you could pursue orchestra. I think that’s better than a mid AP |
| It’s fine. |

It's fine.
It depends what she wants to major in for college. So it helps more for history/poli sci majors than anything STEM. |
| For top colleges it is ALWAYS preferable to have taken the AP version of any class, so long as the AP is available. |
+1 Truth. But not a large difference for this specific case |
Is she currently 11th? What about APUSH? Where is US history? AP compsci is an elective and ideally should have been left out to fit in AP history instead. There are many options to learn programming over the summer of one wants to, for credit or just for fun! |
| Orchestra and band eliminate the opportunity to take an AP elective in many school districts. I say it's a non-issue and doesn't require explanation to AOs. |
OP here. DD has taken both APUSH and AP NSL and got 5s on the exam. She would have liked to do AP World but just couldn't fit into schedule with all 4 years of Orchestra. She wondered about skipping AP Comp Sci as well but in our district it fulfills the Tech requirement for graduation. Just wanted to make sure that skipping AP World was not a mistake. |
It will be ok. APUSH shows her AP social studies chops, and the transcript will show that the world history class was taken over the summer. |
| At our oos, kids do not get into UVA if they did not take WHAP. Our school has three levels of World History, Easy, Hard, and harder AP. The Hard and AP get the same grade bump for purposes of our school's GPA - the only reason to take the AP is to show that you are taking the "hardest" cause available. To my knowledge, over the last decade, no kid has gotten into UVA who didn't take WHAP,given what is offered at our school. |
| The other things for UVA are if STEM, must take one or more of big 3: AP Physics, Bio or Chem. Not Enviro Science. and MUST have 4 years of language. |
