First corporate golf tournament

I’m a low-level manager and have been invited by my boss (CEO) to a golf tournament in a few weeks. Eek! I’m an okay, but not great, golfer. What do I need to know?

(I am a woman, if it matters, and I kind of think it does.)

Your CEO likely won't be going, this is a spot you're filling after others declines.

I would go out and hit buckets of balls between now and then. I would wear a nice, conservative outfit. You probably know to play fast, don't take a ton of practice swings.

Pre-covid I played in a business tournament. Fun, not serious, but plenty of serious golfers. I am female and won a Closest to the Hole par 3. The prize was a men's state of the art driver.

We were the clients, but there was some older warehouse workers from the sponsor corp who were playing. I beat out one of the older warehouse workers. And you could see the whole warehouse crew deflate for their buddy when my name was announced. I definitely didn't want or need the driver. So I went from the stage over to the guy and handed him the driver. The whole place cheered.

Separately, I think the most important shot for a woman when playing with men is the drive off the first tee box. It establishes that you can play. Like I said, practice before, and practice your swing.

Maybe, but either way, the CEO might be giving her some networking opportunities with possibly important people.

You’ll have a huge advantage on some holes because of the red tees so practice your driving to make sure you can hit it straight.

I would also practice putting and chipping over the next few weeks. If you’re short game is good, people will want you on their team for future events. Good luck!
