28 students in K?

Anonymous
Is this normal in MCPS? All of the K classes at our school started with 26 on the first day and have 27 or 28 now. I offered to volunteer at the school and was told no volunteers until second semester.

Not normal but not unheard of. It just depends on the number of kids each year. Maybe 2 more kids would have gotten an extra teacher. Or maybe even 2 more that registered before school started. They might get an extra class for 1st grade.

What school?

At our ES I think DC1 had 16 kids in their K and DC2 had 19. It was a couple of years ago, and it was a focus school. I think the wealthy ES always had 25+ kids.

For a wealthy school it’s a bit high but not by much. We prefer small classes for our kids, so we chose a focus school. 16 kids in kinder and no more than 18 in first and second grades (and that’s after the class size expansion this year). It never made sense to me to pay an extra $100k to live in Bethesda to have huge classes.

OP, prepare for more kids to enroll through the year. Some schools have higher mobility rates. The good news is 27/28 per kindergarten class should qualify for an additional section. I’d raise this with the principal ASAP.

They don't want parents seeing the far left lessons they're teaching.

This is school dependent but what Pp sd about lefty lessons. We are no longer in public this year because we saw it for what it was. And yes I can read and post about Mcps because a. I was a student here and b. I live and pay taxes here so it behooves us to keep up with the situation and c. We have a year experience to share about if anyone will listen.

I've been super impressed with the MCPS high schoolers I've met. Granted they are the high achievers but they seem like they are getting an excellent education. They will put my generation to shame (and that's a good thing).

This is at Woodlin (Silver Spring), so not one of the wealthiest areas of MCPS. It’s very difficult for me to find the data for FARMS. I have seen old numbers ranging from 10% to 40%.

It's about establishing routines and helping kids get acclimated to school. Not to mention getting through critical beginning of the year testing and implementation of supports.

The 2023-24 FARMS rate for Woodlin was 37.4%.

And some to leave..

Normal for MCPS now. Class sizes will continue to increase as population increases and as it gets harder to hire teachers.
