Entry into Student run Clubs at Ivy

Anonymous
Dc (entering freshman) was a little shocked by the student club culture. Every single club needs applications and interviews and most have a very low probability of acceptance. Seriously regretting the decision to go to an Ivy. This was hardly DC's idea of what college life would be. We were willy to not know about any of this stuff?

You are on DCUM and there were multiple threads going back two years on this very topic.

That said, my kid is at an Ivy and has found clubs that aren’t crazy competitive and some that aren’t competitive at all.

Ok Will look for earlier threads. Thanks. Could you possibly indicate which clubs were not competitive?

UVA and Georgetown do this too. Everywhere has clubs like this. These clubs are not ALL the clubs. And they are not necessary! There are plenty of non-application clubs at schools.

Why do students do this to each other? Big article in the Atlantic about a year ago this.

UMD has a CS club that had 800 applications for roughly 100 spots.

Students these days want to work for McKinsey, TwoSigma, etc. rather than stumbling into them. This generation cares about status and money, and they are happy to step over students in the process. It’s all about looks.

Same at my kid’s school. Kid is in a club sport (in), a service club (in), and hopes for two very competitive clubs. Apps filled out and passed 1 round in first one (second round was yesterday but results unknown) and second round of second one (third round tomorrow) BUT this kid does a great interview and she is generally very relaxed and likable. Definitely makes me worry about my next kid who is an introvert and would not present so well.

Not being accepted to the Princeton Tiddlywinks Club could be a career wrecker.

New poster: you’re a jerk. Some clubs have a real impact on the future. An EMT club gets you certified, credit hours and clinical hours for med school apps. A law related fraternity gets you guest speakers for connections and info, jobs placement bumps, and special study materials and tutoring for the LSAT.

This is normal. Either the college has few active clubs or a lot of exclusive clubs that require effort to join.

I think this is one of the problem with ivies. What school, OP? I know Penn is awful. Such a cutthroat atmosphere.

Insiders are rather intoxicated by their power. I have seen some of the "acceptance" and "rejection" letters. Pompous to say the least.
