Blocking YouTube on our desktop

100% removal of YouTube form your household. Have you done it?

We have tried and can’t get rid of it on one last device — our family desktop.

Thoughts?

Steps we took—we upgraded our internet service to the higher plan which advertised as being able to handle domain name control. Well, we added YouTube to the list of blocked sites … and it didn’t work.

We’ve since removed that upgraded internet since it didn’t work anyway.

Our family absolutely needs to take it down. It’s not good for my tween boy, and he even agrees. It would be helpful for all of us to take a break and have no excuse for him to watch a little. (this post is less about him, and more about the internet issue. He doesn’t do anything wrong on it. But some of the topics YTers discuss is making him scared of the dark, ugh, and a little on the dark side of life).

Thanks.

The desktop has password protection on it as whole but if I let him on for a game or schoolwork, I don’t want him to end up on YT.

Video game and tv consoles - removed or the site is password protected.

Phones - blocked, have to have our password to unblock it.

Have you tried this on your router? I think it's possible on most routers and I'd be happy to help you find the instructions as I sit here with my coffee.
Try googling "block website on {brand of) router" and see what you get.

Have you tried the various website blockers that they recommend for procrastinators?

The one I used definitely blocked youtube. You just put in the address you wanted blocked and the paramters and you couldn't access it.

NP When I've looked at these, they've wanted access to all my app, files etc. That seemed worse that using will power.

I use Blocksite (https://blocksite.co/) for when I need a break from this place and in Whitelist mode for when kids are using my computer. Your kid might discover how to turn it off, but it should work if they don't.
