Those retirement planning seminars with free dinner..

I just got my first one.
Dinner for 2 at Ruths Chris.
Retirement planning presentation..
Is this like timeshare sales?

Yup. Get ready to receive one weekly

I mean I just got my first postcard invitation.
Haven't been to Ruths Chris in a while so I haven't trashed the postcard.

I get these too but have never gone. For those who have, was it worth a nice dinner?

My DW and I were invited to the expensive L’Auberge Chez Francois restaurant in Great Falls, Virginia by one of the wealth management companies. The presentation was around 45 minutes, and it was very pleasant. Absolutely no pressure from them because all the invitees were high-net worth people.

We get dozens of them.
They are for people willing to talk about their assets in exchange for a meal. And maybe some like being "recognized" as "high net worth."
The invites go in the trash

My parents have done a few of these if it's somewhere they really want to eat, but I tell them not to go, because they are always trying to sell you something.

We've done a few, including one at L’Auberge Chez Francois. There has never been high pressure to buy at any of them, you have a nice meal (yes, free), sometimes meet interesting people sitting next to you, amd the a short sales presentation. When you reach a certain net worth, or a certain age, you get more and more invites.

Now that we are empty-nesters, if we are free that evening, and if it's a restaurant we're interested in, we have no problem attending

What net worth? What age? I’m simply curious.

I got three postcards in short succession a few years ago and went to all three presentations because free food. One was awful and there’s no way I would have trusted those people with a dime. One was okay, the people were nice and the concepts they were selling were reasonable.

The third was top notch and, after another year or two of research I ended up moving my money over to them. My mom followed suit not long after. I’ve been very, very happy with my returns. We sit down as often as needed but at least annually to check in, they offer estate planning services included in their fees. They did my trust a few years ago and we’re going to tweak it a little in a few weeks. My mom needs expensive care and she’s still making extra money on her money, despite the insane monthly bills. No regrets at all.

It may not be for everyone but I have a very busy life and I’m not an expert in finance so I can leave them to manage my money, they’ve done a great job over the 7-8 years I’ve been with them, and I can basically set it and forget it.

What is the money management firm you are with, if you don’t mind me asking?

How exactly are they "managing your money"?

Curious, what about the top-notch presentation drew you in? What made it stand out from the others?
