Hey everyone,
My daughter just entered middle school (6th grade), and while I’m happy with a lot of what she’s learning, I’ve realized there are several practical life skills and critical thinking topics that aren’t being covered in school. I want to make sure she gets exposure to things like: * Personal finance (budgeting, understanding credit cards, saving for the future) * Mental health and stress management * Critical thinking (spotting fake news, analyzing media critically) * Basic life skills (first aid, basic cooking, home maintenance) * Job skills (resume writing, networking, interview techniques) Do any of you know of good apps, YouTube channels, websites, or other resources that can help teach some of these? I’d love to find engaging videos or activities that can introduce her to these topics in a fun way, since they’re largely missing from her current education. Thanks in advance for any recommendations! |
Honestly that’s your job. |
Our private school does most of this. |
PP, it doesn’t teach cooking and home maintenance, but, not seeing why you can’t teach that. |
I hope you don't hit her with all these things this year! Why can't you teach her the bolded? She has time for job skills as she is only 12! |
What does PP mean? |

I understand it's our responsibility to teach these things.
I'm hoping to find a way to keep everything organized and have best-in-class resources on each topic. Rather than just some googled youtube videos. I wish an App like this existed. 🤔 |
These are mostly not topics for videos, they are experiential. You can sign her up for something like a first aid class, cotillion (social manners), cooking class. But most of this comes from being with you. Talk to her about the news. Go somewhere together and have her handle the directions and money all day. Make a simple meal together. Talk about what you personally do with feelings of stress, and maybe both of you can work on a new technique together. |
I think your effort to find resources is missing the mark.
Talk to her. Tell her what you know. Answer her questions. Videos and apps can come later but start with a conversation or show her what you do (bank account, paying bills, using credit cards, etc.). |
I think these topics are good for friend groups - like teach your kid and their friends to cook their favorite meal, or your kid and their sibling to take the metro, or change a tire. These are not great topics for videos, but I'm sure they exist. |
It’s appalling how little some of you interact with your kids. Videos to teach life skills???
Let me guess…daycare taught her to use a toilet, the kindergarten teacher taught her button her clothes and tie her shoes, you have her watch YouTube videos when she wakes up scared in the night, the babysitter taught her to brush her teeth before bed, etc etc etc. Be a parent OP! Share your life with your kid. |
Scouts does pretty much all of those and more. 6th grade is a good time to join up. Lots of girl troops now in Scouts, and she can move on to other things once she hits high school (if she wants). It’s a very good middle school age program. |
I agree that you're supposed to teach her this. Schools teach cooking, finance, and job skills later on. Life experience leads to learning these skills. Ask her questions to get her to think critically. |
