What is good enough?

Branching off the scouting thread, if a player always starts on an MLSNext and/or ECNL team and plays the entire game, is that the kind of the player that draws attention from scouts?

I’m sure there’s more to that especially if scouts are watching the same teams all year, and of course you have to play to be seen.

But what are scouts looking for?

Probably depends on the style of play of the academy too.

How about for midfielders?

Related question, in u13 thru u15 mlsn or ecnl do all kids get decent enough playing time? Maybe it varies by position. What would be enough playing time? 45 minutes?

No and I don’t think anyone expects to. I know MLSNext has guidelines but I think each club is different.

At our club, 18 are rostered every week. Not the same roster every week tho but mostly the subs change. All subs get some playing time, some more than others (varies from 5-30 mins maybe?).

What kind of scouts? College? Full time player will get a look but it’s far from a ticket to a college team. There are more full time players in MLSN and ECNL than there are spots on college teams. They need to stand out from the other starters.

From my understanding, for college, any coach who is watching u, the player has already reached out to. So if that’s not something you’ve done, for sure, u would have to stand out to be noticed.

Especially for boys you aren't going to draw attention by just playing. You have to send video and have a relationship with the coach. They don't just come to games of people they don't know already.

Most big clubs in this area will tell you play time is not guaranteed.

SYC is a nightmare. A parent told me their oldest is with the U18 and the coach would send out the roster the night before the game.

The roster coming out the night before is normal practice for academies and MLS Next level teams at SYC and assume for all MLS Next clubs. MLS only allows 18 to be dressed on game day. If the roster has more than 18, a roster is needed.

I think it’s normal practice for most clubs where the roster is limited. And it makes sense if making the roster is dependent on performance during practices and absences bc of illness and other reasons.

Daughter is U15 ECNL. End of bench players get 10-20 minutes a game. These bench players need to hope the goal differential is 3-4 goals to get more playing time. Tie or 1 goal differential, they may not come in at all. My guess is 5 of the field starters play 70-80 minutes/game. The other 5 are 40-60 minutes/game.

It must be hard for you and her not too play that much. I would probably consider leaving to lower level team (ECNL rl), are you hopeful the situation will somehow change?
