Trying to get on a travel or AAU team in 8th grade

Anonymous
My son is relatively new to basketball after playing soccer, football, tennis, golf and baseball in elementary. He basically played all sports except basketball. He joined a rec league and did well. He tried out for both select and AAU last year in 7th and did not make it. We were told by multiple coaches that DS has potential and that in 7th, everyone still plays but there is a large drop off in 8th.

Is this actually true that less kids try out for teams in 8th?

DH said he would see 50+ kids for the 7th grade tryout but only 20+ for 8th. I don’t know if this is because not everyone arrived yet since the 7th grade tryout was before the 8th grade tryout.

It's likely very true. No harm in trying and trying for multiple teams.

Our league has more kids trying to play select in 8th vs. 7th because kids are thinking about trying out for high school teams.

Regardless, you have no control over it, right? Where do you live? Maybe someone knows some pay to play options that can get him some experience.

It works both ways. Other kids are going to drop travel to focus on sports where they have a better chance of playing in high school

In rec league, was he the best player on his team? the second best? or more middle?

You’re better off finding a good trainer to work on his individual needs.
