Elderly parent had a major stroke just weeks after cardio said all looked good

Any doctors on? Help me understand this…

They are OLD. Things can change for the worse at a moment. Doctors aren't God. This is how life works.

I'm sorry OP, but when people get old, things break down. People can get clots for any reason. You need to come to the realization that people die. We don't live forever.

You want to sue that doctor doncha

Stroke and cardio are not necessarily linked.

Cardio = heart
Stroke = brain

Ok, that’s what I don’t understand. I thought there was a connection. Blood pressure issues etc contribute to strokes, no?

This. 100% this. Also things go wrong at the drop of a hat. Anything could have changed in the weeks since.

Clots comes from all sorts of causes. It could have nothing to do with the heart.

They can. Not the only cause of a stroke. Also, in the elderly, things crop up all the time. You have no idea what could have changed in the weeks since. That goes for anyone really, not just the elderly.

Well this sucks. Getting old sucks. And no, I don’t want to sue any doctors, I’m just upset for my parent who has been living a fairly miserable existence.

You can get a clot at any time, OP, even as a younger, supposedly healthy, person.

Atherosclerosis (fatty plaques in arteries) greatly increases the risk of clots. Some auto-immune markers and specific clotting factors also increase the risk of clots. When the doctor said that your parent's cardio check-up was good - he or she meant "good for her age". Which means clots can happen at any time, even if blood pressure is normal, cholesterol and triglycerides are normal, etc.

Best wishes to your parent.

I’m confused why you’re saying it could be because of plaque build up. That’s my entire point. She just had a full cardio work up. Anyway, I just don’t understand what caused the stroke. And yes, I know, old age, etc. But it makes me wonder why we bothered dragging her to these stressful appointments when they don’t seem to mean much anyway
