Kid wants to apply all four and making me tour all four. They are all in Pennsylvania.
Which one is the clear winner a kid with no hooks or financial aid? Usual 4.5 weighted GPA from a W school. Going test optional some schools as high score 1,325 SAT |

Is Pitt even a safety at this point and level of scores?
|
| Kinda feel like intended major or general area of study would be relevant here. |
|
I would ED Lehigh and apply to Pitt ASAP with rolling.
I think it’s your best shot with full pay. |
|
What is the intended major?
City school, huge school, midsize, suburban? They are all very different in those respects. If business, Lehigh or Villanova If engineering, Lehigh or Penn State If health related - Pitt If any other major, whatever fits your budget and preference in the above factors |
| What about Bucknell? |
Did OP mean Penn Stat because they said Penn |
| Psych degree. So Liberal Arts BS |
NP here - you think a 4.5 GPA is not enough to have a pretty surefire admit to Pitt?? |
Penn State, no way would she get UPENN |
|
I think Villanova is a no for ED and RD, unless you are at a Catholic feeder school and the child is a good Catholic and has done a ton of service and leadership.
Lehigh has become a very hard admit. You have a chance if you ED but it will be very expensive. Poor odds for RD. Pitt and Penn State are more likely and will be less expensive than the private schools but more expensive than your state school. Does your child come from family money? Psychology is not a good degree if you want to make a good salary. I would spend as little as possible on undergrad unless your family has extra money for house down payments etc. |
| Lehigh > Pitt > Villanova > Penn state |
OP said Penn not Penn State |
|
Pitt>Penn State for psychology.
Pitt is stronger in liberal arts and humanities. I attended both in parent times and was a research assistant to a Cognitive Psychology professor at Pitt. If your kid wants to go to med school, social work, ed. psych, etc. I'd definitely recommend the larger state flagships with more research work. Apply early to Pitt and be patient if deferred. Their yield from MoCo is low compared to apps. |
Love Pitt - dd just graduated from Dietrich. One of her good friends was a psych major. Apparently, it’s the most popular major so it can be difficult to get into required classes. Her friend almost didn’t get a required class her last semester - fortunately she did get off the wait list. |
