Does anyone know this story? (Sinking of a cruise ship)

Anonymous
I read this article years ago but can no longer remember key details and so can’t find it.

Maybe someone here knows. It was a long article, maybe in Outdoor magazine or something of that sort, that detailed a cruise ship (or maybe it was a ferry) that started to sink and described how some survivors made it. I remember really vivid details about how long hallways became deep vertical tunnels as the ship started listing badly. It described how people had to jump across doorways and scramble and pull themselves over railings.

Does this ring a bell for anyone? If I could remember the ship’s name that would have been enough but I can’t remember any identifying details.

It was called The Titanic.

I don't know that particular article, but possibly the Costa Concordia.

There was also a Korean ferry that sank as well as the Estonia. There was an Atlantic article about the Estonia

Thank you!! It was the Estonia. With 22:25’s help, I found the article. It was from The Atlantic. Here’s an archived copy for those interested.

The author of The Atlantic article is William Langewiesche. He writes fantastic articles, if you liked the Estonia article (and man, it was good!). I highly recommend reading some of his other articles as well

For some odd reason I think about this disaster a lot. It was so recent, and so many people died, and we still talk about the Titanic?

Agree, Langwiesche is the best disaster journalist I’ve ever read. His account of Air France 447 is devastating and brilliantly written.

More people died in the sinking of the Titanic. What's your metric, number of deaths divided by years past?

22:25 poster here.

Longform.org is sadly no more, but you can check the archives. There are 25 articles by William Langewiesche there. I also like Skip Hollandsworth who writes for Texas Monthly. He writes a lot of interesting long form crime articles.

Wow so I think about this same exact article/disaster every few months. The detail that the ship’s long hallways became dangerous and unsurviveable chasms when the ship turned sideways always stuck with me. (I believe that to get out, some people had to literally try to jump across them?) And that two coworkers somehow made it to the water unharmed, but then a wave the size of a small mountain separated them, and one survived but the other was never seen again. Really horrible disaster but also truly amazing writing.

Thank you for sharing. I was not familiar with this tragedy. That article was excellent.
