Low 15XX SAT what schools to apply to?

Anonymous
My son went from a high 13XX SAT to a low 15XX. He’s a high school senior and we weren’t expecting this increase- just saw it this morning

We live in Maryland and won’t qualify for FA.

What schools should my kid add to the list? We are looking for merit. Prior to the score improvement we were just thinking about state schools like VT UMD and Pitt.

Anyone in the last cycle with similar scores willing to share where their kid received significant merit? Also my kid has mediocre AP scores- he has taken 9 so far and scored mostly 3s and a few 4s. He’s taking 5 APs this year. GPA is good all As with the exception of a semester B.

13xxx would not be enough for UMD.

What does he want to study?

If STEMish, look at Case Western. They seem to give a lot of money.

If he wants a larger school, think about South Carolina honors? Penn State, tho not sure about merit money there.

So you student how has a weighted GPA in the 4.5 range and SATs in the 1500s?

You need merit.
Were looking at medium sized State Schools.

What is your child interested in for a major?
What is it about Pitt / VT that put it on the list?

This is not mcps specific. Belongs in Colleges forum.

4.9 weighted 3.98 unweighted.

MCPS has massive grade inflation. I think a lot of colleges know this. They will recalibrate the GPA, and it will be lower.

Smaller privates will give out more merit aid because they are more desperate for students. The amount may make the coa commensurate with in state.

Probably Radford and Mary Washington. Better have good ECs though.

Major? Does he want big/small? Urban/rural? Hot/cold? Near/far? Mountains/Beach?

OP, ignore unserious people like this.

PLEASE don't let DCUM trolls discourage you. Find schools with the major your kid is interested in and apply. Scores over 1500 with high rigor course loads (AP classes) are competitive. Use them. Good luck! This was us last year. It all worked out nicely
