Paying money for screen time

DS is nearly 8 and I watches a little tv. But is very keen on video games. 1) is this the appropriate age to buy a console? 2) we are considering charging money to play since he gets an allowance. Would $1/10minutes be reasonable? He gets a very small allowance of $5

I’ve also heard of kids doing x minutes of math or writing for x minutes of video games.

So he would have to spend his entire week allowance to play video games for a weekly total of 25 minutes on Saturday and 25 on Sunday? That definitely seems unreasonable.

I don’t think asking why not is defensive. Are people saying he shouldn’t have to pay because it’s silly, weird, or he wouldn’t get enough time in per week? Whats the big issue with pay to play?

Do you plan to charge him to do everything he enjoys or just the video games? Seems weird to have to pay your parents to have a little downtime in your own house. Does he have to pay to watch tv? Play board games? Build Lego? Color? or anything else?
