| Before I fork out a bunch of money, I'm wondering if anyone has had success using a sports psychologist to help their kid get past mental hurdles in their sport. My kid has ADHD and possibly anxiety (only during their sport; anxiety is not an issue in daily life) due to some lousy coaching last year, and they are not playing to their potential and are upset about it. |
You could also stop playing the sport that gives them anxiety? |
| What sport? |
That would make things 100x worse. DC lives and breathes the sport—practices and trains independently even more than with a team. I'd prefer not to over-disclose other than to say it's a team invasion sport. |
| Simone Biles found it helpful. |
| OP we're in the same boat. Have your kid with you when you talk with a Sports Psychologist online for the 1st time for the info session. There seems to be some great ones out there. But pricey, be prepared for the 10 session sell @ $120 per session. (or something in the ballpark.) This is to make sure your kid is really onboard with it. I think kids love this sort of individual attention to help them through their issues. And, we are about a 3-6 months behind you in committing to a program. I want to see if these issues continue in soccer for us this fall time. (DD loves the sport, but has a hard time focusing all the time and is often too nervous about getting in the mix in midfield.) Good luck! |
Team invasion sport, who talks like that? |
| Wtf is a tram invasion sport |
| Yes, we use one for my son though he doesn’t have anxiety about his sport. Very helpful. Though it’s a lot more than $120 a season. |
| Bad coaching definitely can bring out anxiety and under performance in a sport. We considered using one as well but also switched teams. |
| My athlete sees a sports psychologist and it is extremely helpful in all areas of his life, not just sports. I don't think you can view it as a way to improve performance on the field, but as a way to help your athlete be in the best mental health through the natural ups and downs of playing a sport seriously. In that context, it almost certainly will be worth the money. |

DD sees a psychologist who was a D1 athlete. This is a good combination for my daughter because she has some natural anxiety, which has at times found its way into her sports performance. We have noticed a difference in her mental health and confidence on the field.
Another poster mentioned changing teams, which we also had to do because of a bad coach. Unfortunately some damage was already done. |
I would take $120 per season even if my DC didn't have any anxiety. However, the PP mentioned $120 per session, not per season. |
She’s an Olympic champion not some mediocre 12 year old who’s nervous about playing a game. |
