Worth it to move to TPMS for math kid?

Anonymous
We live in-bounds for SSIMS but considering a move in-bounds to TPMS. Kid is very into math. While I know it’s unlikely DC will get into magnet even if they make it into the lottery pool, it does seem as though there are more options in math/computer science for the regular students. Thoughts?

Yes. I’ve had kids at both and TPMS is FAR and away the better school overall.

If you are going to move anyway, and like the general neighborhood, then moving inbound for TPMS sounds like a good option. Your child will have a slightly higher chance of getting into the magnet from the lottery, and having a math kid be inbounds for Blair, regardless of whether or not they make it into the Blair. Magnet, is good, long-term planning.

To answer OP's original question, opportunities for accelerated math at SSIMS and non-magnet TPMS would be the same, I assume. Maybe someone can comment specifically on whether TPMS non-magnet offers any advantages in math vs. another MS. I agree that being inbounds to TPMS is a plus for magnet admission.

Your kid has a better chance of making it to the magnet at TPMS. There is a 25 set aside seats for TPMS.

OP here - we’d rather not move, but in looking at the courses offered online it does seem like there is more available in STEM offerings even for non-magnet students.

Sounds like you are talking about electives? They may be better and the teachers may be better but I don’t think it’s worth moving for if you don’t have other reasons to move.
