Peanut butter substitutes?

Anonymous
My 3.5 year old loves his PB&J sandwiches, and eats them every day for lunch. I just found out a child in his class at preschool in the fall has a severe peanut allergy, so no peanut products in the classroom. Are there other spreads that are a good substitute so hopefully my son won't notice the difference! I think other kinds of nuts are still OK.

Sunbutter... made out of sunflower oil.

If other kinds of nuts are fine, try almond butter. If not, try sunflower butter.

My kids definitely know the difference but don't mind.

Sunbutter is delish and is actually made out of sunflower seeds. We actually grew to prefer it after cutting back on pb&j for the same reason. They sell it at WF and Trader Joes, may have seen it at Target but wouldn't swear to it. Just label so teacher doesn't worry.

OP: thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming. Anyone know if you can get Sunbutter at Giant?

I believe so, but it' actually cheaper at WF (if you can believe it). You might also try soy nut butter, which I know they sell at Giant.

Almond butter, cashew butter, sunbutter, soy nut butter. Hell you could go crazy and make Nutella sandwiches.

Sunbutter is great. We buy it at Trader Joe's.

Hummus. Not a nut butter but I love hummus sandwiches and so do my kids.

We have tried almost all of these versions and our 5 year old loves each one (he is allergic to peanut butter) but loves these in sandwitches for lunch.

Trader Joe's Sunflower Seed Butter
Trader Joe's Almond Butter (creamy w/ sea salt)
Giant & Target (I believe) carries the I.M Healthy orginal creamy soy nut butter
Costco has some good ones-- we love love the Kirkland Crunchy Soy Nutbutter & also the Kirkland organic strawberry spread-- so yummy!
Also, I would try Apple Butter (my younger son loves this one)

These are staples in our house. I would have him try it at home- it is a different taste- instead of thinking he won't know the difference. But he will probobly find some favorites of his hown.

We have totally switched to almond butter since both childrens' schools are peanut free as well. I actually cook (Asian dishes) now with almond butter too instead of peanut butter. I really like the taste - and I agree, the Trader Joe's is particularly good.
