Going to NY with my two kiddos 13 and 18 yo in Oct. Deciding on which show to watch-they have already watched Wicked, Aladdin, Lion King, Six, Hamilton. Hadestown? Water for elephants (sounds sad)? This is my first trip with both of them together-have usually done separate one on one trips with them.
Also, please recommend a food tour or another tour-we have done the chelsea market one. TIA! |
My boys loved the MJ the Musical.
Hadestown. My 14 yo son loved it.

Back to the Future - this is a spectacle musical but it knows exactly what it is and does it well.
The Outsiders -definitely sad, but is supposed to be solid, especially the dance choreography. One Upon a Mattress - Silly fun, chance to see Sytton Foster. Great Gatsby - again will be sad, but a chance to see Jeremy Jordan and Eva Noblezada. I'd pat attention to who's doing the Off Broadway Little Shop of Horrors, they're rotating in some big names. |
Back to the Future or Harry Potter
Back to the Future, MJ the Musical, Great Gatsby
Hadestown is fantastic, definitely a bit sad (presented in a hopeful way, though).
Hadestown is fabulous. My teen loved it.

Hadestown might be too abstract for a 13 yo (my 12 year old hated it) - although it could work if your kid is in to love stories (my 12 year old boy was not). Agree it is an amazing show though.
I have not seen Suffs but maybe that would be a good fit? Agree Little Shop of Horrors could be good - it is such a fun show. Depending on when you are going, you could also see Ragtime at City Center Encores (opens 10/30). The cast is amazing - it is only there for a couple weeks though |
My kids loved Back to the Future and we just saw little shop of horrors, the girl that played Hailey from modern family was the lead. I’m not sure they loved it but it’s a small theater and overall good experience for them. They also loved the play that goes wrong.
My boys loved Siz. I know they would like MJ.
Sorry, Six
A lot of the current shows have violence and death - Outsiders, Great Gatsby, Water for Elephants. What about Hells Kitchen, the Alicia Keys musical? That's more of a rising up type of story. Hadestown if the kids like mythology is a solid choice.
Back to the Future is great fun! That has my vote.
Op again: Thank you all for the suggestions. Both are/have been into Greek mythology especially the younger one (boy). Considering this, would Hadestown be good? Back to the future also sounds so much fun but I worry that my older one might not enjoy it?
