JR and dyslexia

Anonymous
We are considering Jackson Reed for DS. He has moderate dyslexia and so far has been receiving basic accommodations at his public Middle School outside of the DC area. We are inbound and wondering what people's experiences are with dyslexia supports for high school. Thanks in advance

I suppose not many students (who are diagnosed) with dyslexia at JR?

My child with dyslexia is in college now and attended J-R. DC had an IEP throughout DCPS, including J-R, received the accommodations at J-R, did well and is at a great college now.

Same for us, except kid had a 504. DCPS and JR actually did surprisingly well in fostering a love of reading and writing in my dyslexic kid.

Random given the school is huge and dyslexia is very common and yet still remarkably misunderstood (I.e. this comment).

I know students who really struggled with Wilson delivering the IEP. They were able to make it through Deal with a lot of supports but the model in high school did not work. Part of this was do to the Covid block schedule and the school not pivoting to support students needs.

Most students I know with Dyslexia who are IB for JR are enrolled in private schools including Sienna, Lab, McLean, SJC and Holy Child

We have a kid with Dyslexia who transferred into JR for 11th. Special Ed has been terrible, mostly because of administrative chaos, high staff turnover, and funding cuts from last spring that hit special ed deep. The folks and teachers try hard but they are up against it. Happy to chat offline with anyone about it. Pdstulley@hotmail.com.
