if you move to MCPS to start in 7th grade--is it possible to apply to any of the middle school magnets? Particularly if the move is not known til 1-2 months before the school year starts?

I don’t know if they’d admit a 7th grader to a middle school magnet program for grades 6-8, but if your child is coming from a contained classroom for gifted students (meaning they had classes that were exclusively part of a gifted program), it’s worth inquiring with DCCAPS (Division of Consortia Choice and Application Program Services). They advised that this was the key for students in elementary school who moved to MCPS and were looking for admission to a CES. Our CES did admit one or two new students who moved here in time for 5th grade.

Nope. You still have people on the waitlist from 6th who aren’t getting in.

That’s what we were told as well. We moved when DCs were in 4th and 6th. FWIW, both kids got into magnets the first time they were eligible.

That was before EA and MS were by lottery though. I think it would be even harder to argue that your kids should be admitted midstream under the current system.

They don’t take anyone from the waitlist for seventh so if moving into the district gets around that I would be PISSED.
