From offer to physical move. I am ok to start them prior to the move and accept travel/remote for a time. |

Agree with Jan 2. Arrange a one week business trip per month - Sept, Oct, Nov. My company is very functional with remote work. |
| The timing may hinge on a natural break in schooling. So end of the semester or next school year. I have a friend who delayed her relocation for a year from NYC to SF in order to move after the end of the school year. But she was also going to very expensive private schools and would have lost out on tuition and they also needed time to be admitted to private schools in SF. In the meantime, she worked remotely with the org. |
Age of the kids likely also matters. |

Is there a trailing spouse? I was only offered a big relocation package once. I started immediately. My wife house hunted on line she would face time me when I went to houses. She also came out spring break with kids and looked at 10-15 houses all on one day.
We bought house. I set everything up, she ordered furniture. I put it together. I arranged setting up house. She emptied out old house. Which I did with her on weekends. I did not need zero time off work to move. Then in August family moved into new house. I went back and forth till then |
| When we moved DC to Bay Area my DH flew out in May to interview, accepted the job early or mid June, and I started calling daycares (our older DD was almost 3). It turns out most were building their class / figuring out enrollment by the end of June for a Sept start. We rushed out (company paid) to scout daycare and look at neighborhoods for housing. The company also provided 8 weeks of temporary housing which helped tremendously and meant we could continue looking after we moved. We moved in mid August and I took two weeks off work to settle us in. We had a condo to manage the sale of in DC, but weren’t buying in the Bay Area. Ultimately my realtor was left having to manage aspects of the sale (hired a painter for example) in our absence. 6-8 weeks seems long on paper but it was really fast! (My job let me telework - it took another 7 months for my transfer to our CA office to go through.) |

I did a relocation and I had executive level outplacement service helping in search.
I am surprised you are hiring people without know this information. I was advised HR can not ask certain questions but you can volunteer. Many people back out of relocations, spouse is an issue, moving timeline an issue, kids an issue, etc. So it is always a question in hiring manager managers mind will this work out. I went on three out of state interviews and got two offers. I literally volunteered my wife is stay at home, I have three kids we are still in our starter home that is way too small and we had planned to move anyhow and wife and kids are excited about it and I can start right away. I just got rid of roadblocks in the hiring managers head. |
| Not right on point, but I have recently read several ads for lawyers. The employers are all major (biglaw) law firms. The law firms are requiring the new hire to be relocated prior to starting the new job. |
