| DD’s cheer team has a three missed practices you’re off the team rule. Sick is excused w 24hr notice. Are most high school teams like this or is this extreme? |
24 hour notice that you'll be sick? Our school teams aren't like this. |
|
Our HS teams do not allow any absences except for medical appointments, illness, or death in the family. If you miss a practice or school for any other reason you are automatically benched. At least on my kids teams kids never miss practice so I can’t speak to how many times you could miss before you are kicked off.
I don’t think there is a 24 hour notice requirement for being sick. That feels difficult. |
|
It sounds like you're saying sickness doesn't count towards the three, which would be fair.
I don't think our (boys soccer) team has this rule but I would say boys don't miss unless they are sick. Some may arrange to attend a club practice instead of school practice here and there. They practice M-F and are home by 4:30. Rules like this tend to get put into place when kids start to prioritize going to the mall or (god forbid, homework) over practices. |
| My daughter’s team is one unexcused miss and you’re out. Excused is for illness or death in the family only. Three is pretty generous. |
|
I think a lot of it depends on the reason for the missed practices.
|
Pretty typical. Generous, even. I have heard of you are gone on second offense. |
| What would she be missing practice for? I mean, she committed to her teammates and coach, right? Part of being an athlete is learning how to prioritize and manage the different aspects of your life. |
|
This is high school? Sounds idiotic. I hope the same dumb rule applies to the coach in all aspects of her own life.
Missed work to attend your brother’s out of state wedding? Strike 1! Missed work because of a tractor trailer accident causing you to get stuck in an hours long traffic jam? Strike 2! Missed work because you’re in a coma (and therefore didn’t provide the obligatory 24 hours notice)? Strike 3! You’re fired! |
| My daughter’s club team for a different sport had this rule too. 3 missed practices (not excused sick) and you were off the team. It seems pretty typical once you get to a high level of play. And this was just at the middle school age but well beyond rec. |
|
Welcome to accountability.
3 strikes is generous. |
| 13:44 again and I wanted to add that no one got kicked off the team but no one missed excessively for things. They were understanding for illness and deaths in the family or storms. These kids weren’t missing for conflicting tutoring lessons or birthday parties at this point. |
yea, how the heck does anyone know they will be sick 24 hour before they are sick? |
Our school lets anyone play, and encourages people to come when they can. |
Personally, I think kids should be allowed, even encouraged, to do more than one thing at this age. Their sports team at this age is not their job or career. Sometimes your sports practices interfere with orchestra rehearsal or theater tech week. Kids should be given the flexibility to be multi-faceted, or even allowed to miss to prepare for a big test, as academics should always come first. Blowing it off for no reason should not be encouraged, of course. |
