Vegan dishes are cholesterol free (cholesterol comes from animals and animal products such as dairy).

Hi- I'm a dietitian. The most effective way to lower blood cholesterol is start by lowering animal FAT in the diet. It's more important to reduce fat rather than dietary cholesterol because your liver coverts fat to cholesterol (this is also the reason why animal products the major sources of cholesterol: plants don't have livers and thus y don't produce cholesterol). Check out some of the recipes and cookbooks from the American Heart Association as a starting point.

Did your DH's physician give him a referral to see an RD? If not, he should consider asking for one. A good RD and a willing patients can make great progress. It's a total pet peeve of mine when doctors tell patients to go on any specific type of diet but fail to give them any education on how to implement said diet except for a few pamphlets.

Also, completely avoid alcohol. The liver function directly affects CHD and drinking will raise LDLs.

PP,
I'm stunned that you would give dietary advice with no knowledge of the patient. If he is used to drinking a glass of wine every evening, maybe reducing that to several times is better than eliminating alcohol altogether? Also are you suggesting the corn syrup, which is not animal product, isn't on the list of things to be eliminated? Empty calories is a pet peeve of mine.

corn syrup is a SUGAR, not implicated in problems with cholesterol as FAT certainly is. Though obviously its not a nice thing to consume and everyone should avoid it.
