Window/door company necessary?

Anonymous
Embarking on a renovation and have the following to do:

1. Replace fiberglass sliding patio door with French door interior wood inswing

2. Completely cover up a window. Get rid of the window.

3. Change the size of one window.

Pella came out and quoted me $19,100. Every contractor I talk to about other work we want to do tells me they can easily handle the window/door replacements.

Do I really need to go with a window/door company? Last GC told me that companies like Pella overcharge massively and it’s highway robbery.

Any competent GC can handle the things you outlined. Further, they can get brand name windows from a building supply, so you would not be giving anything up by using a GC. No need to go with a specialist window or door company.

Should they be able to get interior wood French doors? I don’t want fiberglass on the interior.

Yes. A GC can get anything which any quality window/door manufacturer will make, including Andersen, Pella, or whatever else. Those manufacturers sell much more product via Building Supply companies than they do via their local franchisees.
