Any advantage to taking SAT early?

Anonymous
DC (currently a sophomore) informed me that some teammates and friends had already taken or taking SAT in the fall. DC proceeded to take a practice Digital SAT and scored fine (700 RW, 800 M) over the weekend and wants to take SAT sometime in the Fall. I don't think that's advisable but is there any harm? College applications are several years away, so what's the rush? I don't understand why some kids take SAT so far ahead unless they are confident that they'll score high and would not need to take it again. Anyone BTDT?

Higher PSAT, and less junior year stress

Another advantage is that if they take calculus junior year, their algebra will get rusty. No downside to taking it early

DC and a few friends took it the summer between sophomore and junior years. The idea was to reduce stress during junior year.

Apart from the occasional athlete, I haven’t heard of any of DC’s classmates taking it before the end of sophomore year.

Why does taking the SAT at the end of freshman year lead to higher PSAT? Granted that most of these kids were in pre-calc in 9th.

its great practice in a non-home setting, one of the reasons most people score 7% less in the actual exam is the setting change.

Since the PSAT is at the start of Junior year, studying for and taking the SAT before that time rather than after will naturally lead to a higher score

As long as your cherub has taken geometry anytime is a good time . Junior year is an enormous lift so getting it done prior to that is a gift.

Taking it early and then stopping shows colleges that you are cramming not learning.

If you can't pass an algebra and geometry ttest while learning advanced xalculus, you are not ready for college math!

Colleges will smell desperation a mile a way if they see you applying with scores a full 2 years old.

Take Aug at the start of junior year after prep over the summer. Don't worry about it until next summer.

I don’t agree with this point. My kid took it early junior year. She got the score she wanted, then didn’t have to worry about it any more. Lots of stress with APs and college apps jr and sr year. It was nice to have it out of the way. No indication that it hurt her with her college apps.

LOL. Colleges could not care less. All they care about is the score.
