Clarksburg Outlets

When they opened not so long ago, it was touted as high end outlets (at least the upper level) but the high end stores never took off. Now, the whole place is just meh.

What happened to Clarksburg outlets and why didn’t it take off as higher end outlets?

I don’t think “higher end outlets” really exist, OP.

The nearby folks are not necessarily the high end shopping type, no? They had space out there to build it and did, and people come. How are they going to compete with online?

I mean, malls in general are dying. And a “high end” outlet mall has got to be at least a bit of a misnomer because truly “high end” brands don’t want to dilute the brand. It’s a recipe for failure.

Yes, lol - that term, in and of itself, is contradictory.

Outlets are all fake now, even Freeport ME is pretty much gone. Stores can list all their clearance items online for free/nearly free.

This development was built as a fortress and that’s not what people want, it’s too hard to walk to the store you want. There is too much competition from Hagerstown, Leesburg and Oxon Hill, Rehoboth. Not close enough to tourists. Retail malls and most stores are not doing well right now.

There used to be some - Woodbury Commons used to have Chanel among others. I think internet ruined it - now you can’t get rid of stuff discreetly via an outlet. However, you can do it via a site that requires membership, so I think this is where the stock went.

Doesn’t Clark’s burg still have some places like Theory and Coach? Is the stuff just basically mall prices, or is it special made for outlet lower grade products?

First, I would not consider Coach “high end.” It isn’t cheap, but it isn’t high end. It’s a super MC brand like MK or Kate Spade.

Second, yes—the Coach outlet has mainly, if not exclusively, slightly lower quality stuff made for the outlet.

It’s fine if you know what you want but not great for just wandering around. I’m not a high-end designer label person but I go specifically for the Nike outlet which has good deals on my favorite running shoe or to the Adidas outlet for my son. I have on occasion made a purchase at Coach or Tory Burch. But there’s not enough good stores to make a day of shopping. Years ago I enjoyed spending a day at Leesburg with my mom for the kids clothing stores and Crate and Barrel and William-Sonoma outlets. Once my kids outgrew those types of outlets it felt way too far to drive from Montgomery County.

I am in Rockville and went once a few years ago. It was pleasant but did not feel I couldn't have found the same prices at Montgomery Mall which is much closer
