Are late practices typical in middle school?

My 11 yr old DD has 3 practices a week. Her Weds practice is 8-9:30 pm. I’m surprised they have 11 and 12 year olds practicing this late!

Yes. Totally normal. There is limited field space so they take whatever they can get.

Yeah. I hate them. In highschool they were the same last year. This year is better. Luck of the field.

Its unfortunate... we also had 8-9 year olds going 7-8:30 last year. We skipped those. But middle school is worse because MS starts so much earlier than ES. Ugh. Write the Club director. Obviously the Tech Director and Coach do not seem to object.

Are your fields lit? Otherwise they will get earlier after DST.

What do you think this will do?

My 16 year old has one day that is a 530 practice and that is not easy either. I would prefer the later start

That’s later than my kids ever had at that age. Not okay.

This is the first year we’ve got a practice ending after 9. It’s only once a week for my 2012’ers team. I’m not a fan of it because they’ve got bus pickup at 6:50 the next morning, but I can deal with it once a week. Happily she falls asleep easily.

The Club Director can override the Tech Directors decisions on matters like scheduling. If enough parents rock the boat, they will take a good look at it and come up with a solution that prioritizes sleep for younger kids vs the older ones. Hell, play on grass. We don't have to cram every team onto turf fields all the time. My coach was pushed not op a grass field last week, the girls really enjoyed it. -Point it, I think there is more field space available when you consider grass field for 1 practice a week. Personally, I'd prefer to play on an imperfect grass field at 5:30pm instead of being shoved onto 1/6th of a turf field at 9pm w lights. Wake up the next day is so bad for the MS kids.

Grass fields are difficult in the fall due to the daylight.

Personally, I feel it's child abuse to expect a tween to be physically active at that hour. It's not like they're just asked to stay up and read a book. They can get injured from being fatigued at 9pm.

Then don’t let your kid play.

Yes my 8th grader has a 2 hour baseball game starting at 8pm next week on a school night and it’s a 1/2 hour away.

Oh I certainly do not let my child play! But I support all the other parents who also think this is too much.
