Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| Can anyone provide me information regarding to Stenwood Elementary School? Seems like many neighborhood schools are discussed in this forum, but not much regarding to Stenwood. Is it a good school comparing to other neighborhood vienna schools? |
Yes, it's quite good. It's very similar to Westbriar ES in terms of student demographics and the types of neighborhoods served (a mix of SFHs and modern townhouses). It is overlooked in some discussions of Vienna schools because, while located in Vienna, a lot of Stenwood's students live in the Dunn Loring area. Students attend either Kilmer or Thoreau Middle School and then Marshall HS. |
| My DS is going to Stenwood Kindergarten this fall. How is the differentiated instruction there? DS missed the cut-off date by a few days, so he will be one of the oldest in the class. Due to the fact that he has been Montessori schools for three years, he has mastered all the addition and subtraction skills, also is reading simple chapter books. I wonder if I can request him to be in the reading group with higher grade students (without being considered as a POTA)? I don't want him to be bored and waste the entire Kindergarten year. |

Not Stenwood...but in general, regarding Kindergarten...I would just hang tight for a bit.
I've noticed over the years that many teachers are more likely to just roll their eyes when a parent professes that their child is way ahead of the game. If you give it a month or two and let the teacher discover what level he is at, accomodation usually goes more smoothly. My son was much like yours going into K last year. Early in the year, they do a DRA word analysis test. My son achieved a perfect score on this, so the teacher had the reading specialist test him with the DRA2 to get his reading level. Instead of participating in much of the letter and sound learning the class was doing, he was sent to work with the librarian on small research projects during that time of the day. They don't do much math in K, so although the teacher picked up on his skills, there wasn't much time for advancement during the day. I kept him challenged and progressing at home throughout the year and luckily in 1st grade they do ability grouping at our school for math. |
