this is only my third year in the area so I’m still shocked by how hot it can get at this time of year. From what I remember, there was a couple of 90+ days last year into the third week of September.
Can the true DCUMers tell me how frequently we get 90+ days in September? When is it finally over???? |
Well, it's not September yet. August is always really hot, same as July. I grew up here and am 60. So, the biggest change I've seen climate-wise is the Winters are milder, almost never snows anymore--just gray and damp, the trees and flowers and need to mow all start several weeks earlier, and finally, the Fall leaves are appearing later and later.
But this is not unusually hot for late August, IMO. |
This is normal. It's hot until Octoberish here. |
This is not unusual. |
Not true. |
OP here yes I know it stays quite warm until October but I’m wondering how late do the 90+ days still occur? My experience past 2 years says they do decrease in September , right? Right?? |
Yes, OP, they do. |
Lots still in September and some in October too. And more every year. |
There was a wild Halloween (so October 31st) a few years back (5?) where we had a tropical storm blow through and then 90 and humid and muggy after for trick or treating. I remember not knowing what the heck to do about costumes. |
It was 98 degrees in October one year.
Next week looks nice but we are NOT out of the woods. |
Last year we had 90 degree days in September - somewhere around the 2nd or 3rd week. It's not at all unusual. The historical monthly high for September is 79 and that is probably a few degrees higher if you only look at the last couple decades.
I work outside year round and have in DC since the early 2000s. It doesn't get reliable cool here til November. October is usually 60s-70s, but you always have a few sunny days in the 80s. |
I looked it up:
September 2023 9/3 94 9/4 96 9/5 97 9/6 96 9/7 96 9/8 92 |
jesus this is bleak. forecast for this september seems sane, nothing over 90 but I dont trust it entirely either. |
I just came on DCUM to start a similar thread. Long range forecasting isn't totally reliable but nothing I'm seeing has it bursting back into the 90s at least through late September. It's unlikely we won't get at least one more spike, but for now we slept with the windows open and I have a lightweight blanket around my shoulders as I start my workday since the house is cool.
It's lovely and I'll enjoy as much of it as we can get even if the heat does return for a bit at some point! |
It was 59 degreees when I left the house this morning. I LOVE it. I know we'll get at least a few more hot days but I find it extremely satisfying when the calendar flips to September and we're immediately rewarded with a few cooler days. |
