Bought car in MD but live in VA

Anonymous
I was in a time crunch needing to get rid of an old car, and the car I wanted was in MD and I bought it at Carmax, and my understanding was they were submitting the registration to VA DMV.

I regret not thinking it through a bit more since I would rather have paid those taxes to VA and now I am dealing with the hassle of registration.

My VA DMV account reflects that I sold my old car (sold in VA) but the new one is not showing up yet and my temporary plate expires in 3 weeks.

What do I do?

Just wait. Carnax should have handled it for you. It’s common to buy a car from a state you don’t live in. The dealership handles all the details and you pay the tax for the state you reside in.

Did you remember to get your inspection done? When we bought a car in MD, they did not submit the paperwork until we got it done.

And, if the paperwork and new tags don't show up soon, contact the dealer, they can send you a new temp tag until you get the stuff from VA.

YOu do need to let your county know you bought it and pay the tax.
