First week of school tiredness and grumpiness

Anonymous
Have a 7th grade and 10th grade - My kids have gotten pretty tired mentally / emotionally so far but they’re also a bit introverted. Any mention of tiredness and sleeping early …. oh boy… the debate and dirty looks makes me wonder if it’s worth asking if they’re tired and let them just deal and learn themselves.

- how tired are you kids by the end of the day this first week of school? Emotional , mental, physical?

- And how grumpy do they get?

- What do you all do?

I'm a teacher and my family knows to not expect much from me the first 2-3 weeks of school. I'm exhausted and in bed by 9:30 every night.

Why even ask? Just give them space, feed them and reduce the demands to the extent possible on what you know is a difficult time.
-grumpy, tired teacher mom of a middle schooler who feels the same way

If your spouse mentioned that to you would take it well or would it annoy you?

Ha ha. Well, we actually take it well… I mean maybe give a look and ask what… but no biting heads off.

My 7th graders are still adjusting and this is our 2nd week back. Their extracurricular activities start up again after Labor Day and that for whatever reason starts to get them back on track. I think the fact that they can’t come home right after school and nap because they have practice helps right the ship. They come home from school, get a snack, head to practices, come back, eat dinner, homework, shower and then they are lights out and fall asleep easily.
