Please don't double park for drop off in the morning. PLEASE!!
You kids aren't as quick as you think they are, and traffic backs up all around. Signed, your neighbors from further into NE DC. |
Please walk or bike to school. |
Oh thank you for posting this. I was a Maury parent and regularly saw people doing the stupidest sh*t on Constiution. No ma’am, you do not need to do a u-turn in your giant SUV in the middle of the street that involves backing into the crosswalk. You may drive around the block. No sir, you do not need to park IN the crosswalk. |
This. Maury has a teeny tiny zone. Your kid can walk. If your kid lives in Virginia (sorry, I mean OOB) then have the courtesy to drop them off on a side street. |
Yup, especially because a good chunk of the OOB kids at Maury have proximity preference. So we're talking 85% IB ++ proximity folks who are, by definition, within .5 of a mile. WALK OR BIKE. |
Please don’t criticize my driving. |
The tags on the white SUV causing the problems yesterday morning were from DC. Like HOW do you not know that messes up traffic for blocks?? |
DC needs to be way, way more serious about residency checks than they are. |
Again, ALL the offenders I've seen this week have been DC plates. I hate MD drivers as much as the next person, but rich, entitled white people are the core issue here. |
Having now attended three DCPS schools and visited more during morning or afternoon drop/pickup, this is an issue at many if not all schools. The crossing guard program needs to deputize guards to ticket vehicles parking badly in the school zones, including ones that park and go into the school (or are not even school affiliated at all!) for hours, blocking the safe spaces for families that need it. Or something else, it should be possible for DDOT to make something work to disincentive this type of thing.
For Maury it may be as simple as getting more to walk. But for charters and schools with a significant OOB population, there is a need for dedicated, protected, and enforced school pickup zones. Our current school does a “kiss and ride” for the mornings that works somewhat well but the 3:15-6 dismissal and aftercare pickups are the wild west of crazy double parking and questionable zooming around on one way streets. |
