How early do freshman look for these internships?
What’s the best way? Through the school clubs or personal connections? |
| Lower tier/mid market firms will hire. Use connections. Make sure resume is updated. |
|
Look at linked in profiles of older kids in major - if at top school - or if not, those kids, your kid knows from high school, who they admire, who have been successful in getting competitive internships and jobs later in their college careers.
Look to see what they were doing this summer after freshman year… Early bird gets the worm. |
|
OMG
They just started. Seriously does it start this soon???? |
It really does now for all fields. DC first year got close with Econ prof and did computational econ research. Second year got an internship at an investment bank. Third year did both research and an internship at a HF (this was a tough year) and left college as a quant. Kids start very very early now. |
| Some schools have a fall internship fair, and another in the spring. |

State flagship student: After freshman year, had a fun summer with a fun job. After soph, applied autumn and got Cisco. After junior, applied autumn and got Goldman Sachs.
I like that he had that first fun summer. It was good for our whole family. He is now happily employed and well paid in consulting. |
| I do not know any kids who had real internships after freshman year. I am sure there are some but don't think it's all that common. |
+1. This is very similar to how things worked out for our current senior. |
| Believe or not, they started two months ago. |
Some finance internships started all the way back in April for summer 2025. DC is currently applying for an opportunity in summer 2026 |
|
Sounds like I need to have my HS senior apply now for Summer 2027 the way this is headed.
Anyone understand the philosophy of recruiting Summer interns two years before they will actually work? |
April? Ha. Try October 2023. That's how far ahead things have gotten now. |
Not for current freshman. |
| Finance recruits from Spring previous year through this fall for Summer 2025. Make sure LinkedIn and resume are stellar. Join one of the finance clubs. Figure out who is coming to fall recruitment fairs and whether freshman are allowed. Reach out to friends and family that have connections. Get a 3.8 or higher firsf semester. |
