I don’t order takeout from UberEats very often, if we do takeout it’s usually direct from the restaurant but we were crunched for time and hungry, so we ordered UE.
The bill for food was $31, plus $1.50 service fee, plus $5 “service fee” (which “may include a delivery fee”) plus tax, for a subtotal of $41. Uber suggested 21% tip of the subtotal, so $8.21. I left a 20% tip on the food ($31), which is $6.20. Am I being petty and cheap? I do like to take care of service/gig workers, I just hate Uber being so manipulative. I know, I know, don’t use Uber Eats again. Just wonder for others who do use it, do you tip on the subtotal, or a the food? |
| “I want my two dollars” |
| So, one vote for petty/cheap. Got it. |
| I tip based on how much driving is involved and any complicating factors, such as the driver having to climb lots of stairs or deliver in inclement weather. I don’t base the tip on the cost of the food because the driver is doing the same amount of work, whether I order a grilled cheese sandwich or filet mignon. |

Two people got food for $41 so they can continue doing what they were doing - likely making money for themselves or something more important.
Read above, how hard to get is the restaurant? How far is it? Did you meat the driver because it's hard to get into you building? If you go sit at any place where uber drivers come and go, you can see that they wait for the food and have very hard time parking. |

20%. The delivery fee goes to the restaurant.

. Actually, that might be going directly to Uber. I’m not sure. Typically, the fees/tip with Uber eats are going to add up to an entire entrée. This is why you need to choose wisely when you use it. Sometimes I’ll tip maybe a dollar or two less than 20% if it’s a place that’s really close by, but I figure parking is usually an issue at most places during the pick up face and try not to be an ass about it |
| I usually assume it's not worth someone's time to drive to my house for less than $15, $20 if it's a larger order. I agree with PP who says it's the same work whether I get expensive or less expensive items in my order. I also do the same for grocery delivery/instacart. If it's a lot of heavy stuff I will up the tip from there but I have a floor of how much I tip. |
