Mathematics 5/6

I just saw Mathematics 5/6 on my 5th grader's schedule. Can anyone help - what track is this? What math class would this child be taking in 6th and 7th grade?

That's compacted math 5/6. Puts them on track for AMP 7+ in 6th, Algebra 1 in 7th, Honors Geometry in 8th.

Was your child in compacted math 4/5 last year? If not then they should have talked to you about 5/6 before placing them there, as it is a good idea to practice the first half of fifth grade math before school starts.

Our middle school has two paths after 5/6 in 5th grade. One is AMP6 leading to AMP7 in 7th or algebra for kids that do really well in AMP6. AMP7 is the other and those kids definitely do algebra for 7. They trying to have more on ramps to accelerated math.

We are new to MCPS. I saw 5/6 on the child's schedule yesterday.

Did your child do accelerated math in their prior school? If not, you might want to start working through khan academy grade 5 math now. The course will start in the middle of grade 5. (Students covered all of grade 4 and half of grade 5 in 4th grade.)
